Congratulations are in order—Sleep.ai, a startup from the 2015 Digital Health batch (then known as Bruxlab), has been acquired by the US-based SleepScore Labs, the company behind the non-contact sleep improvement system for consumers, SleepScore Max.
The startup was founded in 2014 and since then has been helping people who grind their teeth or snore during sleeping. Sleep.ai’s founder and CEO Michiel Allessie, a Dutch board-certified sleep dentist, has spearheaded the development of the company’s two main product—an app that can tell the patient whether they snore and/or grind their teeth and a wearable that helps stop snoring.
“We’ve been impressed with Michiel and the team. Building a startup within Digital Health is difficult, and Sleep.ai has been gaining quite some traction in a short amount of time. The acquisition will mean that the technology and solution from Sleep.ai can continue to solve snoring or bruxism for many more people.”
Rune Theill, CEO & co-founder, Rockstart
Sleep.ai was one of the ten startups that joined the inaugural Digital Health program that kicked off in Nijmegen in 2015. Rockstart is currently running the third Digital Health program in a dual directorship between the program director, Akshat Kshetrapal, and ecosystem director, Casper Smeets. The third program will culminate in a Demo Day on June 21.
Allessie is convinced that the acquisition opens new opportunities, as Sleep.ai is starting a new era on its journey in the science of sleep.
“With the knowledge and the drive of the team at SleepScore Labs, along with the available technology, I believe we can really change the landscape of sleep in the coming years and help people significantly improve their sleep health. We are only at the beginning of what we can do to help improve people’s lives by diagnosing and improving their sleep health, helping them get better treatment and outcomes.”

The Sleep.ai app has already been downloaded more than 250,000 times from the App Store and Google Play store. With the support of SleepScore Labs, the adoption of the technology can grow even further.
