Rockstart Smart Energy Accelerator 2014 alumnus WeShareSolar, the largest Dutch crowdfunding platform for solar energy projects, just announced €500.000 in a funding round led by ifund foundation and DOEN Foundation with the participation of a private investor.
WeShareSolar is the crowdfunding platform that connects consumers who are looking for low-risk investments to local solar energy projects that need funding. WeShareSolar allows users to track the production of their investments online. Community members can invest into solar energy projects starting with amounts as small as 25 euros.
Since its launch in 2014, the startup has quickly grown into the largest platform of its kind in Holland with 1.000 members who have already invested €900.000 into various projects. With the help of the community, 1100 solar panels were installed on the Euroborg stadium, and several other buildings have now been equipped with sun roofs as well. One of the projects that are currently open is Solar Initiate. a project launched by citizens of Breda who want to have 7.000 installed solar panels along the nearby A16 highway in Breda.
ifund and DOEN Foundation, who led the funding round, are supporting green and sustainable initiatives of ambitious entrepreneurs. With the current enormous growth of the market for solar panels, they see the necessity of the platform that connects local solar project developers to investors. WeShareSolar team is planning to use the money raised to grow and increase brand awareness among citizens and roof owners who are interested in green energy.
